7 Tips When Social Goes Sideways

“Going viral” is something typically reserved for the latest cat meme or YouTube video star, but it’s also something many government agencies are beginning to experience – and not always in a good way. The South Daytona, Fla., Police Department fell victim to this when a non-resident posted a controversial image on her public Facebook wall over a holiday weekend. Some 13,000 posts and comments later, the department found itself thrust onto the national media stage and under pressure to respond quickly to requests for information. After successfully managing the situation, the department shared seven tips that can help other government agencies better prepare for going viral.
